The nigeria National Political Reform Conference: The right Direction

At least few issues are bound to task the attention of members of the National Political Conference as they begin a new session this week. From the controversial Immunity clause through the structure of government to the thorny issue of resource control among others, the stage seems set for what observers might describe as the fight of the century.

Of course, the mere jaw-jaw cannot be the so-called fight of the century. What may rather turn out to be that fight of the century is when the masses do not see the dividends of that CONFAB at last.

That informs the rationale behind the call for the CONFAB members to painstakingly consider the issues at stake. Although there are concerns in some quarters on the propriety of some members to re-build the damaged national psyche, once under the supervision of some of them, yet, there are counter position, and therefore the need for members to take a deeper look at issues. In deed, what should bother their minds are why is there resentment about the polity.

How did we go this far? What are the positions that would gain genuine ovation instead of arraigned charade of rented supporters of such a stance.

Again, often times, people found excuses in elevation of precedent as a yardstick in taking decision without a recourse to whether such decisions were done in bad taste. This is the time to change it. For instance, Kano State has more Local governments than Lagos State, even when Lagos has more population than Kano, just as the North-West zone has more States than the South East zone. There is also the concern that the minorities' rights are subsumed in the rights of the majority and so on. But if these and other issues are left to lie low, then the Confab members would have succeeded in canceling the common adage that no matter how small a family or its head is, it cannot transfer guests to entertain to a bigger compound. The CONFAB would have succeeded in tightening the already bottled-up resentment. These are only a tip of the ice-berg.

Let everyone that has a stake in making this outing a success, make sure it is so. Let no one see oneself as a repository of knowledge. Let every issue be weighed on an impartial scale of justice and not in terms of who shouts the loudest. Because, just as a hungry man's disposition to issues, some sections and issues may have been weakened, and may not muster enough strength to defend themselves.

And let everyone that would be entrusted with the responsibility of implementing the outcomes of the CONFAB know that posterity, like a time book, has started taking records, which will build up to apportion places where each of them will belong.
